Steel Penny (1943 only)
The 1943 Steel Wheat Penny became famous and hoarded. With only one year of mintage (1943) from all 3 mints (Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco), the steel penny became known as the War Penny.
The United States at it's finest year in WWII, decided that they needed the copper resources. They minted the 1943 Wheat Penny out of steel and also minted the Jefferson Nickel out of Silver!
The unique composition was low grade steel coated with zinc, instead of the previously 95% copper based bronze composition.
