Liberty Nickels counterfeited as $5 Gold Coins!
The Liberty Head Nickel lacked the "cents" on the coin and only had a huge "V" for 5! Of course criminals will get the idea of changing the coin into a $5 Gold coin! The size was very close to a $5 coin already, so they would plate the coin with gold and pass it off as a $5 gold coin! The coin soon became known as the "Racketeer Nickel" because it was gold plated and used back in the 1800's as a nickel that would be counterfeited as a $5 coin.
